Advanced Personal Writing Workshop

Course Description

You're a person who may have drafted some essays or chapters already or you have some experience with memoir. Or someone saw something you wrote and said "You better be working on a memoir!" Or maybe you've taken a couple of writing classes or you feel ready to hold your own with other writers because your story is that big or your determination is that strong. And now you just know it’s time to put those pages together, and have a group help you organize them, edit them, and shape them into something. If that's you, this class is for you! I'm happy to share the syllabus with you. This is a class that won't feel like a class, it will feel like a community. In this advanced level class, we will read contemporary memoir, study craft, and practice what we learn by workshopping and examining newer essays and memoir excerpts for examples of craft in action. We will workshop deeply and intentionally, in an actively inclusive, writer-focused, antiableist, antiracist way that leads to thoughtful revision and editing. The result of this class is to get written feedback from your fellow students and the instructor on how to connect a minimum of 50 contiguous pages (even if in multiple essay form) and an understanding of how to continue to generate words and ideas to keep it all flowing long after class is over.
