Course Description

Are you a person who may have drafted some essays or chapters already or do you have some experience with memoir and you're looking for a next step that isn't a year-long course but you need something more than just another writing class? Or did someone see something you wrote and say: "You'd better be working on a memoir!" Or maybe you've taken a couple of writing classes or you feel ready to hold your own with other writers because your story is that big or your determination is that strong! Or you've had a bunch of smaller pieces workshopped or read by your writing group and now they're all in a folder somewhere and you just Don't. Know. What. To. Do. With them. That you? Hiya! This class is for you! If you aren't sure you fit this description but this workshop speaks to you nevertheless, you are still welcome! Please reach out to me at thewriteaimee@gmail.com. I'm happy to share the syllabus with you. This is class that won't feel like a class. It will feel like a community. In this intermediate/advanced-level class, we will read one contemporary memoir together, have a shared craft book for reference, study advanced craft topics together such as writing interiority (vs. showing, for example) and how to generate suspense, and practice what we learn by looking for examples of those craft in comp books. The result of this class is to get written feedback from your fellow students and both written feedback and line edits from the instructor (me!) in a singular workshop of a maximum of 50 contiguous pages. We will workshop deeply and intentionally in an actively inclusive, writer-focused, antiableist, antiracist way that leads to thoughtful revision and editing. You will leave knowing you are writing a book! Payment is by Zelle, PayPal, or Venmo. Please text or email me (thewriteaimee@gmail.com) for the info if you don't know it. I accept payment plans if needed; a deposit of $150 to save your spot. Financial aid can be available, especially Black, disabled, LGBTQ+ so speak up!
