Advanced Personal Writing Workshop

Course Description

You're a person who has drafted some essays or chapters already or you have experience with memoir or creative nonfiction. Or someone saw something you wrote and said "You better be working on a memoir!" Or maybe you've taken a couple of writing classes or you feel ready to hold your own with other writers because your story is that big or your determination is that strong. And now you just know it’s time to put those pages together, and have a group help you organize them, edit them, and shape them into something. If that's you, this class is for you! I'm happy to share the syllabus with you. This is a class that will feel like a community. In this advanced level class, we will read one contemporary memoir, study craft, and practice what we learn by workshopping and examining our writing for examples of craft in action. In this intensive six week course, each student be workshopped once, and they will submit up to 50 preferably (but not imperatively) contiguous pages. They will get useful feedback in the form of a thoughtful editorial letter from each of their fellow students plus line edits from the instructor. We workshop deeply and intentionally, in an actively inclusive, writer-focused, antiableist, antiracist way. This leads to thoughtful revision and editing. We never workshop more than two students per week, for a maximum of 9 students per class. The goal of this intensive class is to end with 50 workshopped pages: now you are on your way to writing a book! You have built a community and you've gotten enough feedback to continue generating words and ideas to keep the momentum going no matter what your next step is. Payment by Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal.
